It might seem stupid to take issue with the clothes a person wears — and usually, we’d agree. In fact, neither of us ever criticized Boy George or Vanilla Ice back in the 80’s and 90’s.
But when the whole point of an outfit is to identify someone as has having special spiritual status — it might be worth talking about. Wearing robes, or special shirts, or awesome hats seek to do one thing: visually identify the spiritual leader/mediator/head of a church, and separate that person from the common ‘layman’ (a term that could deserve its own video at some point). And we don’t feel it’s justifiable simply as a tradition, because it directly works against building up a ‘priesthood of all believers,’ and instead reinforces the idea that only specially trained people can lead a church.
If you are a pastor, or a teacher, or a leader — those gifts will be self-evident because of Christ in you, not a XXL frock on you.
