Attendance

In some churches, the biblical role of the pastor has become skewed, and evolved into the ‘everyman’ position. A single person becomes pastor, teacher, counselor, administrator, and CEO of a local church body, whether or not his gifts allow him to effectively fulfill these roles. This system ultimately leads to a dangerous predicament: the pastor, seeking to serve God, supplants God as the Head of the Church. Instead of looking and listening first to Christ, people look and listen to the Pastor for guidance, direction, and permission to use the restroom.

Inevitably, a codependency is formed: people passively listen to what the pastor says they should do, and as such, the pastor is prevented from encouraging people to walk out in their gifts and hear from the Lord as a priesthood of believers. This is not about leaders having no place in the Body, or assuming that all pastors are power-hungry egomaniacs. We think the fundamental role of pastors is about empowering and developing the church, as opposed to doing everything for them. It is the difference between spoon feeding people and teaching them how to be fed from the hand of God.
