What exactly is tithing supposed to be about? Our heart is to see tithing connected to a generosity that flows out of a relationship with Christ. It should not be tied to a percentage or specific amount, or assumed that it has to go to a local congregation.
The Kingdom–reality of finances is that everything we have been given is from God, and we have the joy of partnering with Him as He leads us to use those resources. That may mean ‘giving’ nothing away for months or everything for years. Tithe has, in many congregations, become something of a membership fee; although it might pay for helpful programs, it often goes to maintain and perpetuate a church-system with salaries, insurance, mortgages, and other overhead costs.
While this may be an appropriate use for your tithe, why not just ask Him, “where or to whom should I give, how much, and how?” When you don’t get a really specific answer from Him though, you should probably send that money to Chris and Andrew at TheChurchYouKnow.com. We’ll make sure it gets spent according to His plan.
